Joseph Crownover MacPhail, Jr.
Joseph Crownover MacPhail, Jr. 65, died peacefully at home February 28, 2010 after a brief illness.
Joe was born in Beloit, Wisconsin and he lived in this area for many years. He was the son of the late Dr. Joseph C. MacPhail, Sr. and Thelma Leigh Bell MacPhail. He was a Methodist, a member of Portsmouth Rotary Club, and a Civil War re-enactor and enthusiast. He was a graduate of Chowan College and University of Richmond. As owner and operator of Joseph’s Cabinet Shop he handcrafted beautiful antique reproduction furniture. He was formerly employed by Virginia National Bank and Central Fidelity Bank.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Nancy Brinkley MacPhail; four children, Joseph C. MacPhail, III and wife Alison of Charlotte, NC., Thomas W. MacPhail and wife Deborah of DeLand, FL., David W. MacPhail and wife Angela of Charlottesville, VA., and Catherine M. Smith and husband Christopher, also of Charlottesville; eight granddaughters, Elizabeth, Ashleigh, Emily, Sarah, Olivia, Anneliese, Reagan, and Cameron; brother James H. MacPhail and wife Diane of FL; sister-in-law, Sarah Brinkley Hanel of Portsmouth.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 3312 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, by the Rev. George B. Neas. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett’s Creek Chapel, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk.
