James "Jim" Kraner Strickland

James “Jim” Kraner Strickland, 74, of Suffolk, Va. passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022. He was born on January 26, 1948, to James Christopher and Georgia Joanna Strickland.

Jim served his country proudly during the Vietnam Era as a Seabee in the Navy and was awarded the Vietnam Technical Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart. After his military service, Jim, worked for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and continued with many accomplishments where he was recognized on the Congress Floor for his achievements. Jim was the president of West End Civic League, Naval Civilian Managers Association, and Peaksview Homeowner’s Association. He loved being in the woods hunting, camping, or building his dream cabin. He was the #1 Dad and loved his family. Jim believed in community. He was the go-to guy in the neighborhood. If there was ever a need, Jim would help you out. Every Christmas his love for his community would shine as he became Santa and handed out candy canes.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Deborah L. Strickland; son, Charles Christopher Strickland (Allyson Yost); daughters, Elizabeth Snellinger (Zacherie Lay), Rebecca Godfrey (Randall Godfrey); grandchildren, Dylan Yost, Riley Godfrey, Ella Snellinger; sisters, Janis Babbitt (Fred), Joanna Ray (Pete); his “brother”, Brian Zartman; and numerous other family and friends.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at R.W. baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel, 509 W. Washington St. Suffolk, Va. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made in his name to Suffolk Animal Care of Suffolk. The world has lost a great person, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and citizen, Jim Strickland. I had the honor to work with Jim and know what a respected leader he was. I introduced Jim and Debbie and saw their love bloom. The montage of photos shows the loving family and friends that Jim cared for and loved. This is a great loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Jim. My husband and I were friends with him in our Peaksview mountain community, he was our association president, and we were the other Jim & Debbie on the mountain. After I lost my husband Jim was so supportive, he used to call me to keep me in the loop and just to talk, and I appreciated that so much. He was a great guy, we had fun times together as a group, and I'm going to miss him so much. Heartfelt blessings to the family.

We always enjoyed the visits ‘ James K’ made to our farm here in Ohio in the summer of his teen years. We had a job for him in the hay mow as soon as Aunt Georgia got him here. When we visited Virginia, we enjoyed the visits to the ship yard.
Sending our deepest sympathy. May God give your family comfort.

I had the pleasure of working for and with Jim for many years. He was truly visionary and effective in managing programs important to both the NNSY and the Navy industrial community. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in peace my friend.

Jim was a true southern gentleman. I have known him since I was 15 and had several classes with him at Cradock High School. I was fortunate to work with him in NNSY. I am so sorry to hear of this. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. Heaven is gaining a great man.
