James "Tyler" Tompkins

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the death of James “Tyler” Tompkins, 24, of Suffolk, Virginia.  Tyler entered eternal rest Monday April 25, 2022.

Tyler was born Monday October 20, 1997 to James and Shannon Tompkins in Portsmouth, Virginia.  Tyler was enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program at King’s Fork High School and was a member of the KFHS Bulldogs Swim Team.  During his high school years, he also earned his Arrow of Light and went on to reach the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts Troop 1 Suffolk, Virginia.  He graduated from King's Fork High School in 2015 after which he attended Old Dominion University.  He then began his career at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in the NAVFAC Midlant Environmental Services as a Utility Systems Operator Repairer.

Tyler was a proud member of the Suffolk Masonic Lodge 30 where he became a Master Mason at the age of 21.  He was very proud of this achievement.  He had plans to seek master level degrees within his lodge.

Tyler is survived by his parents James and Shannon Tompkins, his brothers Logan Tompkins and Benjamin Tompkins, his grandparents Jimmy and Linda Curtis, his grandmother Janie Tompkins, his Aunt Alicia (Fred) Brewer and his Aunt Rebecca (Chris) Butcher.  He was predeceased by his grandfather, James Tompkins, Sr.

Tyler had numerous interests and hobbies among them kayaking, hiking, fishing, reading and traveling.  Some of his happiest times were traveling with his friends in Scouts to far off places like National Parks, Wyoming, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore and New York to name a few.  He also enjoyed traveling with his family to places like Niagara Falls, Canada, Key West, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico.

Tyler was loved by everyone who knew him.  During his time with us, he always made it a point to be kind and help anyone he could.  To this end, he participated in a lot of community service for his young age.  His most visible service was his Eagle Scout project in which he organized, supervised and restructured an overgrown lot into a viable parking lot for Main Street United Methodist Church.  But, he also participated in numerous soup kitchens, can food drives, Suffolk Humane Society projects and assisted with projects at Obici Hospital, Kids’ Zone and Goodwill. He volunteered as a Camp Counselor at Cub Scout Day Camp and Church Summer Camp.

He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of family and friends who cherish him.  He really was that pebble thrown into the lake creating ripples of kindness that extend far beyond us.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, from 6:00 - 7:30 PM at R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the funeral home followed by the burial with Masonic Rights at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive guests after the services in the reception room at the funeral home. Condolences may be registered at RWBakerFH.com

Memorial donations can be made in Tyler’s name to CoolEarth https://www.coolearth.org/donate/usd/ or World Wildlife Fund https://support.worldwildlife.org/site/Donation2?df_id=13830&13830.donation=form1&s_src=AWE1800OQ18266A02562RX  as Tyler felt strongly about protecting our Earth.
