Joy Carter Johnson

Joy Carter Johnson, wife of the late H. Philip Johnson Jr., left her earthly home and entered into her heavenly home on April 28, 2019. She is now in the presence of her Precious Lord and Savior.

Joy was born in Scotland Neck, NC on February 24, 1930. She was the fourth of twelve children of Nancy Charlotte Carter and Herbert Oats Carter.

Joy was born with an identical twin sister who their mother named Foy. She was preceded in death by her son, Dr. H. Philip Johnson III of Richmond VA, her twin sister Foy Gwaltney, sister Alice King, brothers, S. Martin Carter and O. Holmes Carter all of Suffolk, sister Acene Byrum of Spring Grove VA and infant twin brothers Hubert and Herbert Carter.

Joy graduated from Holland High School in 1948. Joy and her twin sister Foy were well known throughout Suffolk and the surrounding area in the 1950’s for their beautiful singing. They sang for the Lions Club, Rotary Club and many civic functions in Suffolk and the vicinity. They even had their own radio program over WLPM better known as “The World’s Largest Peanut Market" every Monday night. They also sang at numerous weddings and funerals.

On Joy’s 70th birthday, her daughter Shelia took her and her sisters to the MacArthur Center for the day and lunch. When they arrived home a beautiful surprise awaited her. In her living room was a lovely black Wurlitzer grand piano with a large red bow attached to the post. Her other children were there for the surprise. Joy was so thrilled. She has always dreamed of having a grand piano. She enjoyed playing the piano so much.

Joy was a member of the Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church at Kilby Shores for forty-six years. She was saved under Rev. Norwood Starling’s ministry and sang in the church choir for many years. Later a church pianist was needed, and Joy was elected pianist. She served that position for 15 years but eventually had to give it up because of so much back pain. She was junior class Sunday School teacher for 15 years also and taught all three of the Starling children, taught Vacation Bible School for many years.

To the Johnson Family, Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Your Mother was such a lovely lady! (Your Dad and my Mother, Marie Riddick Pearce, now deceased, were first cousins.) I graduated from Forest Glen with Sharon and Phil. My husband, David Boyette worked with your Dad at Virginia Power. That was a beautiful video! She will be missed by so many.

Your mother was a dear Christian woman who is now with God! I know she is now rejoicing with all her wonderful family in heaven. Joy was a wonderful person with so many talents. She will surely be missed and yet we all know we shall see her again. To all her family you are in our thoughts and prayers and we send our love and deepest sympathy.
