Kerry Reid Caddle

Kerry R Caddle, 71, died August 17, 2021 after a slow, progressive condition called normal pressure hydrocephaly (NPH). He is predeceased by his parents, Betty and USMC MGySg John J Caddle.

A Marine kid with two older brothers, John and Richard, his parents raised them to love their country and to help others. While not born in Virginia, he lived and loved Norfolk for over 40 years, only begrudgingly venturing outside of his treasured West Ghent neighborhood. With his first wife, Judy Caddle (d.1993), he had three girls, Amy Birdsong (McLemore), Suzanne Guinn, and Mary Beth Sunderman (Erinn). Kerry received his master plumber’s certificate in 1981 and started his own business named A & S Plumbing. With the surprise arrival of Mary Beth, A & S became Ghent Plumbing. He was always there for clients, taking and making emergency calls at all hours of the night, including holidays. He truly enjoyed helping people and took pride in his work.

After his first wife died, the family was blessed when he met and married Dianne Schneider. Although they divorced years later, she continues to be a fixture in the girls’ lives. Besides being a remarkable person, Dianne brought three wonderful children into the family, Quinton Schneider (Rachael), Amanda Massie (Tim), and John Schneider (Alix). Quinton and John worked with Kerry for years, and kept his business going when he first started showing signs of the condition we now know was NPH. When his disorder finally forced him to retire, Quinton started Heritage Plumbing of Ghent, carrying on where Kerry left off.

Three years ago, due to his NPH, his daughter Amy moved him to Suffolk to be closer to her. He rarely went a week without letting her know he wanted to move back to Norfolk! Despite that, he met many kind people where he lived at Centerbrooke Commons and he enjoyed hearing about his 10 ½ grandchildren. Special thanks to his older brother John, who always took time to visit from North Carolina and help out.

Like many others in our neighborhood, I was very fond of Kerry Caddle. When my family moved into West Ghent, we were given his name to take care of our home and plumbing needs. He was always so generous with this time and made sure we were taken care of. His smile as well as the " twinkle in his eye" when he'd make a joke is etched in my memory. I feel the loss knowing of his absence. Much love to his wonderful family. He was so proud of each and every one of those children!

Kerry came and assisted late at night at my home in West Ghent. It was years ago when there was a record setting big freeze. I could tell he was exhausted due to the volume of emergencies he had handled that day but he put me and my family above himself. Salut to one of the good guys. Rest In Peace.

A caring neighbor who would stop his truck and chat. Really cared about the people in Norfolk. I'll miss him

Kerry Caddle was a wonderful man. He helped us in numerous ways in plumbing situations in our home and also at the place I worked, donating his services. I always thought of him as the "man in black", serious, but so kind. Prayers for Quint, John and Amanda. He will be missed.

Kerry was more than just our plumber for our home and our business (Naro Cinema) for decades---he was a good friend. I have missed not seeing him for years riding in his truck or car in Ghent. May his memory be eternal.

I used to be the manager of Schell Supply in Norfolk and enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Kerry as he was always the "answer man" for all things at our counter. My condolences to his family. Grateful to be a past friend and admirer!
