Lillian Barnes Fowler

Lillian Barnes Fowler, 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Holmes Fowler; her parents, Curtis and Bessie Barnes; sisters, Daisy Ann Byrd, Janice Collins; and son-in law, Jeff Bangley.

She is survived by her daughter, Joanne Bangley; sons, Carroll Fowler (Susan) and Tommy Fowler (Ann); grandchildren, Sherry Huffman (Mike), Mark Fowler (Tiffany), Brian Fowler (Katie); and great grandchildren, Clint, Claire, Haley, Kash, Wyatt, Avery; sister, Rose Mitchell (Billy); sister-in law, Helen Glenn; and several nieces and nephews.

She dearly loved all her family and was always there for us. She retired from Nansemond Suffolk Academy as a bus driver after 20 years, a job she loved where she made many good friends.

Our dad was diagnosed with Parkinsons in his early 50’s and mom became his devoted caregiver for over 20 years. She was a faithful member of Somerton Methodist Church for over 60 years until her health didn’t allow her to attend.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to caregiver and friend, Cathy Robertson, for her love and wonderful care for mom.

Service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022, 2:00 pm at Somerton United Methodist Church, 8610 Whaleyville Blvd., with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends the night prior, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm at R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel, 509 W. Washington St. Suffolk, Va. In lieu of flowers, mom asked that memorial donations be made to Somerton Methodist Church, C/O Amy Seiling, 1780 US Hwy 13, Gates N.C. 27937. Online condolences may be registered at RWBakerFH.com.

Dear Joanne, Carroll and Tommy, I have so many fond memories of growing up in Somerton with your family. Playing tag football in the front yard of house, playing in the playhouse in the back yard and vacationing in Nags Head with your family. May those happy memories and many more comfort you in your time of grief. Your mom will live on in our memories as a fun and lively lady. She will be reunited in heaven with your daddy and all her other heavenly family members.
