Mabel Nadine Baker King

Mrs. Mabel Nadine Baker King of Greenville, NC, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on July 17, 2020. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Hebra King, Sr., daughter, Nadine King Gillespie; son-in-law Lt. Col. Thomas F. Gillespie, and brothers Raymond R. Baker and Clyde F. Baker, Jr.

Mrs. King was born in Gates County, NC to Clyde Furman Baker, Sr. and Bertie Roberts Baker. She spent her early childhood growing up on the family farm with her two brothers and sister in the rural community of Drum Hill, NC. After graduating from high school, she worked in a clerical role at Newport News Shipyard during World War II.  In 1945 she married the love of her life, Bruce Hebra King, Sr., and spent the next 15 years loving the adventures of life as a Navy wife. After her husband’s retirement, Mrs. King and her family settled back in Gates County where she spent many happy years taking care of her immediate family and creating cherished memories with extended family and friends. During this time she was a member of Savages United Methodist Church, where she was active in all aspects of church life including the Missionary Society. Mrs. King owned and operated King’s Drum Hill Market and enjoyed the community gatherings associated with a country store. In her later years, Mrs. King moved to Greenville, NC, to be near family. In 2004 she joined St. Peter Catholic Church and enjoyed being a part of the church and school. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend; she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Bruce H. King, Jr., and his wife Jean, and granddaughters Marianna, Christina, and Amanda; her son Patrick H. King, grandson Jonathan and granddaughters Tiffany and Megan; her daughter’s children, Brent Gillespie, Allison King, and Joy Gillespie; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her very special sister, Mrs. Vivian Baker Nassif, and her family and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, with an 11:00am visitation at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory in Suffolk, VA  followed by a graveside service at Holly Lawn Cemetery at 12:30pm with Rev. Tim Rawls officiating.
