Mary Louise Moore Holland

Mary Louise Moore Holland, 95, of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away in peace on the morning of February 25, 2022 at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her beloved children.

Mary was born in 1926 in Winder, Georgia, to parents Ina C. Moore and Harry Lewis Moore, and was the youngest of four children. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband, Aubrey Lee Holland, and her youngest son, Thomas Daniel Holland, her parents, sisters, Kathryn and Margaret, and her brother, Max.

She was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia, for many years, and enjoyed serving as treasurer of her Sunday School class. She delighted in her “Church family” and enjoyed socializing with the other ladies at Church. Mary was a devoted wife to her husband Aubrey, a Navy Officer, whom she met and married during World War II. They enjoyed 27 years together until his death in 1970. She was also a kind, loving, compassionate, generous, gracious, and gentle mother, and loved her children without limit. She referred to us as her “jewels”.    Mary loved the beauty of God’s green earth and passed down that love to her children. She was an avid gardener and had an enviable “green thumb”. She was also an animal lover and cared for countless pets over the years.

She is mourned by her surviving children, Ina C. Hummel (Bob), Carolyn L. Griffin (Joe), Frederick V. Holland (Trishia), of Windsor, Virginia, Kenneth E. Holland, of Norfolk, and Margaret H. Godfrey (Steve), of Richmond, her beloved niece, Virginia Nunnally, of Windsor.  She was blessed to have 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Mary will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, and we, her children, are eternally grateful to have called her “Mother”.

A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 12 noon in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23502. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary’s name to your favorite charity. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel is serving the family.
