Ray Holt Mitchell was born April 19, 1930 on Walnut Valley Farm in Bacon Castle, Virginia and died February 8, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Susie Mitchell, his wife of 68 years, Shirley Mitchell; brother-in-law, Kenneth Samuel and sister-in-law, Thelma Samuel.
Ray and Shirley made their home in Surry, Virginia. Ray farmed for 65 years and worked for 36 years in the Postal Service and was the Surry Postmaster. He served on the Surry Town Council. He was a life member of the Surry Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member and life member of the Surry Rescue squad. He donated many years of service to his beloved community. He was a proud member of the US Army.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth Mitchell, and wife Kristee; granddaughter, Tamee Railey and husband Benjamin; great granddaughter, Danee Railey; nieces, Karen Belcher and husband Keith, Shelby Johnson and husband Shawn; great nephews, Brandon and Chris Belcher; great nieces, Valerie Daniels and husband Patrick, Amanda Warren and husband Wesley; great great nephews, Owen and Nolan Daniels and Levi Warren.
The family will have a private service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wakefield United Methodist Church Preschool.
