Robert "Bob" C. Taylor

Robert C. “Bob” Taylor, 81, passed away peacefully in his home on September 17, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his mother Eunice Byrd Taylor, his father, Charles Russell Taylor and four siblings, Edward, Raymond, Jean and Faye.

Bob was a lifelong resident of Suffolk, who graduated from Suffolk High School, where he was a star athlete. He was the successful business owner of Suffolk Tire Company, where he spent a 47-year career. Bob was widely regarded as an honest businessman and was a fixture in the Suffolk community. He was a long-time member of St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church.

Bob was an avid beagler, with seven field trial champions to his credit. In 1990, he was inducted into the Virginia Beagling Hall of Fame. He was also an ardent gardener. He and Shirley always grew a bountiful vegetable garden and he was ever in pursuit of the perfect tomato. Other interests included spending time outdoors, reading westerns and quality time spent with his family.

Left to cherish his memory are Shirley, his devoted wife of 60 years, their five children; Terri (Craig), Michelle (Mark), Tamara (BB), Robert, Jr. (Dana), Michael (Erin); eight grandchildren, Dawn, Christopher, Ali, A.J. Madeline, Trey, Devin and Liam; and his brother, Bill.

A Catholic mass will be held at St. Mary’s on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 10 AM. A procession to Holly Lawn Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 21, 2022 from 6:30 to 8 PM at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad. Online condolences may be registered at www.RWBakerFH.com.

As a little boy, I remember my mother, Odelle Oliver, taking dresses and other items to Mrs. Taylor to alter. I remember seeing all of the SHS graduation pictures in Mrs.Taylor's living room and nearing Mrs. Taylor frequently talking about Faye and Bobby. We also lived on Elizabeth Street. I am so sorry for your loss. Bobby Oliver, Williamsburg, Virginia.

Bobby was one of the nicest guys I have ever known - a caring and fine gentleman from a fine family. Many fond memories of growing up in Kingsborough with him and Faye. Peace and grace to his family.

We're very sorry to learn about Uncle Bob's passing. I have fond memories of Uncle Bob, Aunt Shirley, their 5 kids & numerous beagles at their Suffolk home & at the beach 1 summer when I was a child. Uncle Bob was always witty & funny as he relentlessly teased me as a child. I've shared many stories about Uncle Bob's great success with his Trial Beagles based on the stories that my mother shared with me about Uncle Bob, her youngest brother over the years. My mother, Jean Taylor Tuck, was the 4th child born of the 6 Taylor siblings & the 1st sibling to pass away in October 2012. I loved listening to her tell me about things they did as adults & children plus the lifetime of stories shared when the 6 Taylor siblings used to get together at least once a year as they got older & retired. Although we're grown & scattered across the US now, I'd love to see their children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren have reunions one day to celebrate the 6 Taylor siblings' lives & share precious stories about growing up with the 6 Taylor siblings as our parents & grandparents since the oldest & only surviving Taylor sibling, Bill, was in WWII. I have done extensive ancestry research on the lineage of their parents, Charles Taylor & Eunice Byrd, & I would love to update it to share with my fellow Taylor-Byrd cousins. It has been great to see Uncle Bob stayed close to his Taylor Family roots by staying in Suffolk for 8 decades to build a big, beautiful family with Aunt Shirley & a successful business. Please find peace & comfort knowing how much love & devotion Uncle Bob had for his family, especially for Aunt Shirley & his 5 children.
