Wilfred Waverly Kilgore

Wilfred “Will” Waverly Kilgore went home to be with the Lord on December 17, 2021, at the age of 81. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Kilgore and Sadie Kilgore; his brother, William Kenneth Kilgore; son, Russell “Rusty” Kilgore Price; the mother of his first two children, Tae Rodriguez; his fifth wife, Mamie Godwin Kilgore and longtime companion, Colleen Malanga.

Will was proud to serve in the United States Army Airborne Division as a graduate of the prestigious U.S. Army Ranger School. Sadly, his service was severed by two bouts with rheumatic fever. He met the mother of his oldest children, while stationed in Okinawa Japan. It was his heart’s desire to have been a career soldier.

After separation from the military, he became a salesman for Olivetti Underwood and Beechnut Life Savers and Gum, respectively; he ultimately landed in the car business and timeshare sales with a couple of years as a restauranteur under his belt.

Will was direct and did not mince words, many respected him for that. His friends and neighbors unanimously agree that he was a gentle giant. He loved the ocean, boating, fishing, duck hunting, smoking, beer, Jack Daniels and his dogs and eventually gave all those things up in later years, except for his beloved dogs. Conflicted by a great many wrongs, he endeavored to be kind and gentle to everyone he encountered. He loved Christmas and loved to wrap up gag gifts (--maybe can of beans or a roll a toilet paper…) for his friend Dorn. He will be remembered with love and affection.

He is survived by his friend and companion, Joyce Bowman; sister, Janice Edwards; son, William “Billy” Kilgore (fiancé, Brittany Hall), daughters Susan Kilgore Clemmer (Dave); Carrie Mann and Eileen Kotalik, who was like a daughter; granddaughter, Kaitlyn James (Thomas), grandson, William “Kyle” Kilgore (Ashley); great granddaughters, Emma Thomasson and Charlotte “Charlie” James; nieces and nephews, Katherine Carlisle (Brian), Buster Edwards (Joe), Clay Kilgore (Tammy) and Rebecca Pearson (Eric).

A graveside service will be held Monday, January 24, 2021 at 11am at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may made to their local animal shelter. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel is serving the family.
